Ingrown NailsAn ingrown toenail (also known as onychocryptosis) is a common condition that results from the edge of the toenail growing down and into the soft skin on the side of the toe. Ingrown nails are usually painful and inflamed (red and swollen) and may be infected. They may be caused by improperly trimmed toenails, very curved nail edges or repeated trauma to the nails. The curved nail shape may be inherited. Frequently the pain is due to a corn or callous in the groove (or sulcus) of the nail. Most cases will require conservative treatment, sometimes oral antibiotics are required if there is an infection. The staff of Toorak Village Podiatry see ingrown toenails daily and can provide immediate pain relief on your initial visit. At times ingrown nails recur and it may be necessary to perform a minor surgical procedure to prevent the side of the nail from growing back. This surgical procedure, known as a partial nail avulsion, is performed at Toorak Village Podiatry Clinic under local anaesthetic with minimal, if any, post-operative discomfort. Your podiatrist will assess thoroughly your particular problems and advise you of the best course of action. Regular visits to Toorak Village Podiatry can manage and prevent ingrown toenails, alleviate pain, and help keep you on your feet! Contact us to book in an appointment today. |
